THE ARTIST:
Paula left school at 15 without qualifications, working as a
clerk typist for several years until 1983.
In 1984 Paula Rothermel was awarded a 'special entrance' to
the prestigious Slade School of Art in London. From there
she accepted various commissions, namely for Whitbread's,
Belize Natural Resources, Cacharel and Luis Vuiton. In 1987
Paula was commissioned by the Royal Signals to portray the
Princess Royal in her capacity as Colonel-in-Chief: prior to
this she completed several other commissions for the Royal
Signals.
During her Slade years, Paula received a
scholarship to study overseas, spending one year in the
ex-USSR, followed by three months in Nepal making a solo
expedition through the Himalayas, traversing the country
from east to west. Upon leaving the Slade in 1988, Paula
moved to Spain where she resided for seven years before
heading for South and Central America. Whilst in Spain
Paula exhibited widely in both solo and joint exhibitions
throughout Spain and the UK and her works now hang in a
number of public collections. Several major Spanish banks,
such as Sa Nostra and Banca March have purchased her works.
In 1991 she suffered a devastating New Year's Eve theft of
her 14 works from a London agent. However in August 1992
Paula's works were exhibited, to considerable acclaim, in an
individual show at the Bruton Street Gallery in London's
West End.
Her work has been featured in the Sunday Times
colour supplement.
Paula now works from her studio in the beautiful Pennine
village of Delph, Lancashire and is currently completing a
PhD at the University of Durham.
