The paintings of Spurnhead show
man's futile attempts to arrest the
erosion occuring on a section of
coastline on the north side of the River
Humber. My first introduction to this part of the country came from news reports in early 1996 when the North Sea breached a part of the peninsula washing away the road. I visited the place in a howling north easterly and was overwhelmed by the surreal atmosphere. Man had previously erected wooden sea defences which over the years had suffered from the pounding of the North Sea. The sea sculptured remnants possessed, in my view, anthropomorphic qualities, each needing to relate its own story about the battle with the sea. |
